Plantar Fasciitis
What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot that connects the heel to the toes. This band acts as a kind of shock absorber to cushion the foot. Repeated strains and stretching of the plantar fascia can cause small tears that can become chronically inflamed, leading to heel pain. This condition is known as plantar fasciitis. It occurs in runners, in individuals who are overweight or in those who wear shoes that don’t provide enough support. Plantar fasciitis also tends to occur in occupations that keep people on their feet throughout the day. The fascia gradually loses its ability to spring back to support the foot. As a result, individuals can experience chronic discomfort in the heel.
Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis can cause heel pain first thing in the morning when you get out of bed and start moving around on your feet. The pain can dissipate after being on your feet a while, but it can return later in the day after sitting for a long period. The pain can also increase after exercising. Plantar fasciitis can become a chronic problem that impacts your ability to function well at work and at play. Finding the right treatment option can relieve the tissue inflammation, so you can resume your normal activities without discomfort.
Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis can be a stubborn problem. Generally, the condition can be helped by using special orthotics that fit into the shoes that help support the bottom of the foot. However, these measures may not be sufficient to eliminate heel pain entirely. Over-the-counter pain relievers can reduce the inflammation and discomfort from plantar fasciitis. In some cases, steroid injections to reduce pain and inflammation. For severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
Chiropractic Care for Plantar Fasciitis
For individuals who prefer to avoid pharmaceutical treatment or surgery, chiropractic care can provide effective relief without invasive measures and without side effects. Your chiropractor can use a combination of soft tissue therapy, manipulative techniques and rehabilitation exercises that can be very successful in relieving plantar fasciitis discomfort.
